Avoid Sitting for Long Time
Avoid sitting for long time as about 8-12 hours sitting per day can compromise your overall health or in other words sitting for long time is killing you.
According to WHO (World Health Organization), physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth-leading risk factor for death of people all around the world. Prolonged sitting has an increased risk factor of early death. The role of sedentary behaviors (TV viewing, working with computer, workplace sitting, and time spent in automobiles) on physical activity and health is a growing concern.
Here are some interesting research findings about sitting and your health :
- TV viewing, the most common leisure-time sitting, may have damaging effects on overweight problem that can be independent of leisure-time activities. That means even if you do exercises, your sedentary behavior is actually killing you!
- Sitting leads to both the suppression of an enzyme, LPL (skeletal muscle lipoprotein lipase) activity and reduced glucose uptake. LPL enzyme is necessary for triglyceride uptake and HDL-cholesterol production.
- Middle-aged men, women as well as elderly group who had to sit more hours/week with less physical activity developed greater risk for premature myocardial infarction (a damage to heart muscle leading to heart attack and death).
- Reducing sitting time and engaging in a variety of non-exercise activities including household chores, lawn and garden work, daily walking is associated with lower mortality in less active adults.
Therefore, be physically active and avoid long time sitting. Make the following your habits:
- If you watch TV, stand up for 1-3 minute in every 30 minute watching.
- If you are at work, make it a goal to stand up or walk around for a minute or three once every half an hour. You could also try a standing desk at your work.
